The landing of Rosetta’s Philae probe on a comet was a very exciting addition to our science week. It was a huge scientific breakthrough because it was the first controlled landing on a comet.
Philae had been travelling through space for 10 years which means that it took off 2 or 3 years before most of 2nd class were even born.
Here’s the lovely video on space that we were watching ….
Take a look at our final 2 experiments of the week. Osmosis and The Tornado.
Osmosis
The Tornado
We made a mini tornado today but luckily it was much safer than the one in The Wizard of Oz ๐
We put water, washing liquid and glitter into a bottle and spun it around. We saw a whirlwind effect which was just like a tornado.
Hi Miss Breen
I have seen the space song I got my mum to look it up on her computer me and Abigail watched it. Then later I saw it on the blog. I told my mum about the flowers and the osmosis and that we put flowers in a jar with water and then we put food dye in and the next day we looked at them and the flowers were changed colours it was my favourite experiment this week.

Hi Miss Breen
I got my dad to look up the solar system and it said Mars had the biggest mountain.

My dad told me that Philae weighed 100 kg on earth but on the comet it weighed just 1 gram! This is because the comet only has a tiny gravity.
Hi miss Breen
I showed my minder the shape song and the pictures of osmosis and the mini tornado she thought they were great!
Hi miss Breen and everybody in the class
My sister told me about all the songs and experiments you have been doing and i hoped
that you had a great science week .

Oz, thank you for your lovely comment. We had a great science week and we were delighted Maya could join us for it ๐
We looked at pictures of the solar system that show the real size of planets. Our planet Earth is really small and all planets are tiny compared to the sun!
This website has a great picture:

That is such a great picture Oscar, thank you for sharing it.
I read that comets were called hairy stars in ancient Greece. This is why the word comet comes from the Greek word for hair. ๐ ๐
To miss breen, I showed my mum the solar system song. she loved it .my favourite planet was venus, mars, sun. and I showed my mum all the experiments that we did . from Emily
