Planet Earth

The Month of April was World Earth Month and April 22nd was World Earth Day. Take a look at what we’ve been up to to celebrate it…. IMG_1024.JPG We discovered that when astronauts look at earth from space our planet is not completely smooth. It has humps (mountains) and hollows (valleys). We explored pointillism during art to create this affect on globes. We were very successful in demonstrating what planet earth looks like in space. We sketched some of the 7 continents and used green paint to colour them. We used blue paint to create the 5 oceans. Can you remember the names of the 5 oceans and 7 continents? What shape is earth? We’re Going Green!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DJ45Yc3urg IMG_1026.JPG We looked at ways that we can protect our planet and used the three ‘R’s to guide us. We drew a picture of something we can REDUCE our consumption of, something we can REUSE and something we can RECYCLE. When we hung them on string we made this cool wall display. We used recycled paper for all of our drawings! We wrote poems about Planet Earth during creative writing and typed them out during our computer time. Here are some examples. They are all wonderful and the rest are on display in our classroom so come and have a look.

Henry took world Earth day very seriously and filled two bags with rubbish from around his neighborhood. Well done Henry! IMG_2797 (4) 2nd class also cleaned up the court yard during the school clean up day last week. Here are some pictures of us hard at work.

    1. Hi Miss Breen

The website that Abigail showed us was epic!!

I spent ages looking at sports science. I watched videos about how dangerous rugby scrums are, how good people’s reflexes are and how long basketball players can stay in the air for.

  7. Hi Miss Breen,
I learned that Africa is the second largest continent and also the hottest. It has the Mediterranean at the top and goes all the way down past the equator and half way to the South Pole.

  11. Hello miss Breen,
I have some facts about planet Earth.Jupiter is the biggest planet out of our solar system. The smallest planet is Mercury.Mars is nicknamed ” the red planet” because it is covered with pinkish reddish rust-like dust. The atmosphere of Venus is made up mainly of carbon dioxide. Neptune is nearly 4 times the size of Earth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. Hi Miss Breen,
I showed my mum the going green song and my planet earth song and she thought they were both super.I can name all the oceans: Indian, Atlantic, Arctic, Pacific and the Southern.

  14. Hi Miss Breen,
Did you know that the earth is the only planet in the solar system that has life (we think!!!) and it is the only planet that has liquid water on its surface

  15. Hi Miss Breen

I found an interesting fact in a book of mine about space.

There is a star called a White Dwarf star. It is very dense. A sugar lump size chunk of it weighs the same as an elephant!!!

One 4,000 km wide White Dwarf has become a pure carbon crystal – in other words, a diamond!!

The diamond star is 10 billion, trillion, trillion carats and would be worth more than all the money in the world!!

  16. Hi Miss Breen
Did you know that the earth is very fragile? Its surface is split into plates (tectonic plates). Inside the earth is active and earthquakes can take place along the edges of the plates.
